Desmos on the SAT: frequently asked questions
Short answers first, the details underneath. Every SAT statement on this page was read off College Board's own pages on the date at the top, and everything about the course comes from the course itself. If your question is not here, email info@learndesmos.com and it might be next.

Is Desmos allowed on the SAT?
Yes. College Board's calculator policy page for the SAT Suite says you may use your own approved handheld calculator or the Desmos calculator embedded in Bluebook, and that the embedded one comes in two forms, graphing or scientific. This course is about the graphing form, because that is the half that draws curves and runs regressions.
Nothing forces you to use it. The same page says calculators are not required, and that if you bring one, a familiar approved model is the one to bring. There is one hard limit: calculators with computer algebra system (CAS) functionality are no longer allowed for tests in the SAT Suite, and the policy page names the banned models. Check yours there, not on a forum.
Whatever you use is for Math only. The policy says you may not use a calculator while working on the Reading and Writing section, and that a handheld goes under your desk during those modules.

Rules change, and this page is a summary written by someone who does not set them. Before your test date, open the calculator policy page on collegeboard.org and read it there.
Is the calculator in the testing app the same as desmos.com?
Close enough that the course treats them as one tool. Chapter 1 opens the SAT version, the one with the green bar across the top, next to the regular graphing calculator and walks through the difference. Typing rules, graphing, tables, regression, lists and the statistics functions behave the same way in both, so practice in either one carries over.
The difference sits in the plus menu in the top left. On the SAT version that menu holds Table and Inference, and Inference is an AP Statistics tool you can ignore for the whole test. The regular calculator puts three more items in the same menu, a note, a folder and an image, and not one of them solves anything.
Two Bluebook habits are worth building now. First, Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V do nothing inside the app, so a line you would normally copy has to be retyped or duplicated: open the edit list, press duplicate on the row, press done. Second, leave the on-screen keypad closed. College Board says Bluebook supports testing on Mac and Windows devices, iPads and school-managed Chromebooks, and the keypad is there for an iPad with no keyboard attached. On anything with keys, every symbol on that keypad is faster typed, the tilde and the square root included.

Where do I practice with the test-day version?
Two places. The first is the SAT version of the Desmos graphing calculator on the open web. Chapter 1 has you search for "SAT Desmos" and open the first link, which is the green-bar calculator the course treats as the same one the calculator button opens inside Bluebook. The lesson states it flatly: whatever you practice there is what you get on test day.
The second is Bluebook itself. College Board's practice page points to a test preview and full-length practice tests inside the app. That is the only way to rehearse the calculator with a real clock running and a real question sitting next to it.
Inside Learn Desmos, every guided practice stage runs a Desmos graphing calculator beside the task, so you type the keystrokes instead of reading about them.
One habit to build early: type everything. The course gives you a shortcut for every symbol you need. Type sqrt for a square root and for the constant. Shift + 6 gives an exponent. Shift plus the key under Escape gives the tilde, which the Desmos help center describes as the key to the left of the 1.
Is Learn Desmos free, and is there a catch?
It is free, and it stays free. There is no paid tier further in and nothing to unlock with money. The site runs no ads. It loads no marketing or behavioral tracking code belonging to anyone else. What it knows about you is never sold, rented or handed on.
The catch, if you want to call it one, is the account. A chapter has to remember what you did in it, and it cannot do that for a stranger.
The second catch is the order. Chapters unlock one at a time, and the course tells you plainly that skipping ahead is not recommended before it lets you skip. That is the whole list. Create an account and chapter 1 opens straight away.
Is Learn Desmos affiliated with College Board or Desmos?
No. Learn Desmos is an independent course, written and built by one person. College Board runs the SAT and makes Bluebook. Desmos makes the calculator. Neither one sponsors, endorses, reviews or has any hand in this site.
The name describes the subject, not the source. No logos or brand assets appear anywhere here, and not a single practice question is lifted from a real test. When the answer to your question is a rule about test day, the job of this site is to point you at College Board and let you read it there. The disclaimer page sets all of this out formally.
Do I need an account, and why?
For the course, yes. This FAQ, the guides and the curriculum overview are open to anyone. The 27 chapters are behind a sign-in.
The reason is that a chapter is mostly state. The video remembers where you stopped. Guided practice saves your calculator as you go, so closing a tab does not wipe a half-built regression. Each hard question runs a timer that pauses when you pause and stops when you answer it correctly, and your progress page is assembled out of those records. None of it survives without somewhere to put it.
Signing up takes an email address and a password. Onboarding then asks for a display name you can leave blank, the SAT date you are aiming at ("Not sure yet" is one of the choices), and your timezone, which is detected for you so streaks and the countdown follow your local day. No date of birth is asked for. The privacy policy page walks through every field one at a time.
Does it guarantee a score?
No, and be wary of anything that does. Learn Desmos teaches a way of working with one tool. It has no control over which questions turn up on your test, how you spend the clock, or the parts of the paper the method never touches.
The honest offer is narrower than a promise. Each chapter hands you one repeatable method, makes you perform it in a live calculator, then makes you prove it on hard questions before the next chapter opens. Finish, and you will know which questions Desmos can take off your hands and exactly what to type for each of them. The score is still yours to earn.
What does the 53.55% coverage estimate mean?
It is the curriculum's own estimate of the share of SAT Math question types the method addresses: Graphing 25.24% plus Regression 28.31%, which comes to 53.55%. It is an estimate of coverage. It is not a score prediction and not a promise.
- It is not the share of questions you will get right. A covered question type still has to be recognized, set up and typed without a slip.
- It is not fixed. The mix of question types shifts from one exam to the next, so what you meet on your test will not match the figure exactly.
- It says nothing about the Prerequisites section, which claims no share of its own. That section teaches the calculator, and those skills run through everything after it.
The rest of the test is out of scope rather than ignored. As the chapter on choosing your method puts it, pure word reasoning with no equation is the only kind of question that stays on paper.
Which chapters cover which question types?
The Prerequisites section runs 12 chapters and teaches the calculator itself: typing conventions, graphing, points and inequalities, single-variable equations, variables versus constants, sliders, function notation, tables, regression notation, fraction to decimal, statistics, and lists and conditions. The 15 chapters after it match question patterns to methods.

What is the three-stage method?
Every chapter makes you perform the method, not just watch it.
- Watch. A short screen recording performs the method once with every keystroke on screen. Captions are there, the speed control runs from 0.75x to 2x, and the player puts you back where you stopped. Reaching the end of the video opens the next stage.
- Guided Desmos Practice. You rebuild what you just watched in a Desmos graphing calculator sitting beside the task. A chapter holds between six and ten of these microtasks. Most are marked by reading your actual calculator, the expression you typed or the point you plotted or the parameters the regression found, rather than a typed answer; a handful instead ask you to type a short answer about what you saw. Wrong states get specific feedback, hints are always available and never counted against you, and the next task appears only once the current one is right.
- Hard SAT-Style Practice. Four original, deliberately hard questions per chapter, three multiple choice and one student-produced response, 60 across the course. Each sits concealed until you press Start Timer, which reveals it and times only your active work. A correct answer stops the clock and opens the full explanation plus the fast Desmos route. You can skip one after a warning, but a skip is recorded as a skip. Once all four are settled, Finish Chapter unlocks the next one.
The 12 Prerequisites chapters stop after the second stage, because they teach the calculator rather than a question type. The 15 chapters in Graphing and Regression run all three.
How long does the course take?
That is up to you, so here is the shape of it instead of a number. There are 27 chapters in three sections: 12 in Prerequisites, 7 in Graphing and 8 in Regression. Each one opens with a short video. The longest runs 4 minutes 21 seconds, 17 of the 27 are under two minutes, and the videos add up to under an hour in total.
The practice is where the hours actually go. Guided practice carries six to ten tasks a chapter, and each of the 15 chapters in Graphing and Regression ends with four hard questions you time yourself on. Working through a chapter properly takes far longer than watching one, which is the point.
The course is linear: finishing a chapter unlocks the next, inside a section and across section boundaries. You can unlock a later chapter early, and the course warns you first that this only makes sense if you are short on time and already solid on the earlier material. Chapters you jump over are counted separately from chapters you complete, and they never lift your completion figure.

If a practice question looks wrong, send the chapter name and the question number, what you typed into the calculator, and the answer you expected. Every question here was written for the chapter it sits in, had its answer key confirmed by symbolic algebra software, and was then read again by a reviewer hunting for holes. None of that beats a student meeting the question cold, so say something when it is off. Mistakes get fixed.
